🎓🏫SCHOOL CLOSURE & REOPENING: 🎓🏫
School closes today, Wednesday 24th June, with a staggered collection between 12.00p.m. and 12.30 p.m.
We wish all our pupils, families, and staff a safe, happy, and restful summer break.
School reopens on Thursday 27th August 2026 at 9.00 a.m.

Mrs. Murray, who is a committee member of Galway Education Support Centre and Principal Teacher at St. Augustine’s N.S., Clontuskert, recently participated in an Erasmus+ mobility programme to the Centro de Profesorado de Cádiz in Spain, where she explored innovative approaches to Modern Foreign Language (MFL) education.
Hosted by Teacher Centre Cádiz, the visit offered a rich opportunity to engage with educators, observe learner-centred methodologies, and participate in professional dialogue focused on multilingualism, cultural awareness, and inclusive teaching practices. The centre’s welcoming and collaborative ethos provided a dynamic environment for professional growth, highlighting how teacher centres can serve as hubs for community engagement, active citizenship, and the development of new competencies.
Mrs. Murray gained valuable insights into formative assessment strategies, digital tools for language learning, and techniques that promote student autonomy and intercultural understanding. This experience has equipped her with practical tools and fresh perspectives that will directly enhance MFL teaching at St. Augustine’s N.S., Clontuskert.
Students will continue to benefit from engaging, culturally rich, and inclusive language lessons that foster communication skills, global awareness, and confidence in using a second language. The Erasmus+ journey not only strengthened Mrs. Murray’s professional practice but also reaffirmed the importance of international collaboration in shaping innovative and inclusive education for the next generation.
Clontuskert is also delighted to welcome Ms. Deborah Glaesner from the University of Greifswald in Germany, who arrived this week and will begin teaching German to all classes from Monday 13th November. This exciting development builds on the school’s strong language programme, which has been running through Comenius and Erasmus+ partnerships since 2010, further enriching pupils’ multilingual and intercultural learning experiences.

At Assembly today we thanked Ms. Sonya Yi for her hard work with our students since September 2022. Sonya has been teaching the students German each day and as a talented volleyball and basketball player has been coaching the Senior Room in both sports. Thanks Sonya for all you have done for our students. Best of luck in your future career.
Message from Ms. Alina Boyan- Clontuskert’s German Teacher for 2021-2022
My time here in St. Augustine’s NS comes to an end and it was a very busy school year
2021-22 for the students and me alike, but I enjoyed our German classes every day. Of
course, I wish for the students to continue to study German – even in Secondary School
and revise some things they have been learning throughout the last seven months.
I 
Both the Middle Room and the Senior Room are able to start, uphold and finish a basic,
but very sufficient, German conversation by greeting appropriately (Guten Morgen or
Guten Abend) asking questions about how somebody is doing today and then ask for
more personal details, like your favourite colour, the current day of the week, your birthday
or even where you come from and currently live! Favourite animals and possible pets can
be described, as well as talking about family and relatives. And if the students can’t
remember a name they are very capable of describing the person – so everybody knows
who you mean!
The Junior Room can greet as well as the other rooms and even know a few more words
about the body and body parts. Of course they learned about their favourite
animals and food, eleven different colours and the numbers up to 11 too!
Additionally, all the rooms can talk about Halloween, Christmas and Easter, sing lovely
traditional German Christmas songs, scare parents and staff alike with newly learned
vocabulary around Halloween and know all about the Osterhase and Schokolade!
Students across the rooms have received additional material to practise if they wanted,
exchanged small notes with me during downtime in class (of course in German 😉 ) and
were invited to test their knowledge with challenging sheets! If you wish to continue in the
future and want to keep in touch I’m sure we can arrange that for everyone interested!
So on a personal note to all my German students:
Ich bin unglaublich stolz auf euch und freue mich sehr, eure Deutschlehrerin für das
Schuljahr 2021-22 gewesen zu sein! Ihr habt großartige Fortschritte gemacht und hoffe,
den und die ein oder andere von meiner Muttersprache Deutsch überzeugt zu haben!
Macht weiter so wie bisher, und wer weiß: Vielleicht werden wir uns ja in der Zukunft
wiedersehen? 🙂

Hallo! Mein Name ist Alina Grupe.
I taught in Clontuskert from September to December 2020.
My jobs included teaching German in all classes, from Junior Infants to 6th Class, every day.
Most of the time I was in the Senior Room as an Assistant Teacher to help students and to answer questions. I supported students in their pods and helped them with their work. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to physically help out in the other rooms, due to the Covid-regulations. However thanks to Microsoft Teams, I was able to teach Ms. Scott and Mr. Gohery’s classes each day, using Teams Meetings to teach on their class interactive boards. This meant I could easily share lessons and resources and teach from another room in the school or from home.
I assisted the staff during special events and celebrations, for example helping with the preparations for Holy Communion, the Christmas Carol Service and more.
In German I taught greetings, colours, Halloween words, the weather and body parts. We were also looking at the months and seasons and to ask about someone’s birthday and how to tell them your own birthday. We focused on oral language improvement in each class. The students studied the fairy tale “Little Red Riding Hood” and compared the German version to the one they know in Ireland.
For Christmas they learned lots of Christmas words, phrases, greetings and songs. Mr. Gohery’s room learned to sing “Leise rieselt der Schnee” and Mrs. Murray’s class learned “Oh, Tannenbaum” and the first verse of “Silent Night” in German. A lot of these topics included songs, rhymes or stories. The students in the Senior room created presentations about German Christmas traditions and presented them in class. We discussed these presentations in the other rooms as well and everyone was very excited to find out about them. The Senior students not only presented them within the school, on a virtual call with Michael Dunlea’s class in New Jersey, in the US, they taught his class about German traditions also.
St. Augustine’s N.S. is such an amazing school, all the teachers and students are such great people and I was able to learn a lot. Thank you so much for having me here!

Congratulations to the Students and Writers of the Week. 
After Assembly we watched our #NoMorePlastic films and shone a spotlight on some of the amazing Flipgrid videos recorded during the week in Gaeilge, German, History, Geography and Science.
Today was our first day back after the Easter holidays. We were delighted to meet all of our friends again and get started for Term 3.
We were especially excited to meet our new German Teacher, Ms. Jeannine Shütze who will be teaching all of the students from Junior Infants to 6th class. This is our seventh year of German language learning in Clontuskert. We are excited to improve our spoken language and learn new songs and games from Ms. Shütze.
