Explorers Education on Teams in Clontuskert

We may be learning remotely in Ireland due to Covid-19 but deep learning moments continue in Clontuskert National School in Co. Galway. Connecting with experts on Microsoft Teams brings our Learning to Life!

Before the shut down we were participating in the Aquarium in the Classroom module with the Marine Institute and Camden Education Trust.

This week we re-connected with Padraic Creedon, live from Galway Atlantaquaria, to review the work we had completed and learn about the squid with a squid dissection and feeding of the fish.

Dr. Anne Dolan visits us in Microsoft Teams

Dr. Anne Dolan visited us in Teams and we interviewed her about her time as a student in Clontuskert National School, how she became a teacher, and her career at Mary Immaculate College- University of Limerick.

Anne’s Research Interests are in primary geography; geo-literacy; sustainability; adult education; development education, and evaluation and participatory approaches to education.

She has written many journals and articles and is the author of two books. She showed us one called You, Me and Diversity and her newest book, Powerful Primary Geography: a toolkit for 21st Century Learning, will be out soon. Our work on the Climate Action Project features in this book.

Clontuskert in National Geographic

St. Augustine’s NS Clontuskert has been mentioned in the National Geographic as part of the international Climate Action Project #ClimateActionP We have been representing Ireland in this project and collaborating with 250 other schools globally to action change against global warming.

This project has been developed and coordinated by Belgian teacher, Koen Timmers. Koen, like Mrs. Murray is one of 300 Microsoft Educator Fellows globally and last year was in the Top 50 Global Teacher Prize shortlist.

You can find out more about the project here.

Each week we worked on a varied aspect of Climate Change and researched and developed a film exploring each theme. Our work can be see on http://www.climate-action.info/users/murray

Climate Action Workshop with Dr. Anne Dolan

Today the students in the Senior Room participated in a Climate Action Workshop with Dr. Anne Dolan. Anne is a lecturer in primary Geography in Mary Immaculate College in Limerick. Mary Immaculate is a Teacher Training college where primary teachers are prepared for Irish schools.

Dr. Dolan is also a past pupil of St. Augustine’s N.S. We were delighted to welcome her back to the school to be part of our work on the Climate Action Project.

We learnt about the Cardinal directions using a modified Compass Rose. Each direction, North, South, East and West stood for various affects of recent Hurricane Ophelia. (Natural, Social, Economic and Who decides?)

We were asked to look at a case study and develop our own ideas of the affects of the storm. Then we chose where each one should be placed on the compass. Some were between directions, for example SE South East (Social/Economic)

This is the film we created of an interview with “Siún Nic Gearilt” (aka Anne Dolan) of “RTE News Clontuskert”.

Mystery Skype

Today we had a Mystery Skype in school. This is where our teachers organise a Skype Call with another teacher’s class through the Microsoft Educator Community. Each class asks questions and researches on the go to work out where the other school is situated. They can be anywhere across the globe. These are some of the questions we asked our Mystery Skype Partners.

1. Are you in the Northern Hemisphere or the Southern Hemisphere?
2. Are you near the equator?
3. Do you have a tropical climate?
4. What line of latitude are you on?
5. What time zone are you in?
6. What time is it in your country now?
7. What continent are you in?
8. Are you in _______?
9. Is English your first language?
10. What is your national sport?
11. Are you a primary school or secondary school?
12. Is your school well known?
13. Can you sing your national anthem?
14. Do you have a team in the six nations?
15. Has your team won the soccer world cup?

Country:
1. Are you coastal?
2. Are you situated in the north, south, east of west?
3. Are you in a city or town?

We then had to use our atlases and maps on the Surface to work out where they were situated.
We worked out that our Mystery Skype School is in Spain. They are in Catalonia, on the coast and north east of Barcelona. They are in Mataro and this is their school website; http://agora.xtec.cat/inslaialarquera/
We hope to Skype them again to learn about their culture and activities.
