FIRST LEGO League Explore

Comhghairdeas to Mr. Gohery’s 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class who presented their FIRST LEGO League Explore project on Boomtown Build so well today.

We were so proud of all the work they completed on the project to make their buildings accessible.

The class was split into 7 groups and each group worked extremely hard completing their builds and they really enjoyed the whole experience.

Everybody in the school is so proud of their efforts. Thanks to Mr. Gohery and Ms. Dolan for guiding and supporting the students.
Well Done!

Microsoft Showcase School Celebration

Today we celebrated Microsoft Showcase School status in Clontuskert. We originally achieved this status in 2015. To date, we are the only primary school in the Republic of Ireland to have achieved this award.

The day began with a visit from Adam and Jamie with the Wriggle Roadcaster. Every student from Junior Infants to 6th Class participated in Minecraft for Education and Sphero coding classes.

At 1.00pm in the school hall, 3rd and 4th class presented the schools’ work as a Microsoft Showcase School speaking about OneNote, Flipgrid, Skype in the Classroom and LEGO Robotics.

Guests of Honour included Richard Ryan of Microsoft, Ireland, Dr. Deirdre Butler of St. Patrick’s College, DCU, Kathleen O’ Connor; retired Principal of Ballyadams NS, Co, Laois, Aengus Byrne of Birr Community Secondary School, Fr. Michael Finneran; Chairperson Board of Management, Stephen Scannell and Elaine Bleahen as outgoing officers of the Parents’ Association and Joe Roberts of Teleflex from Raleigh, North Carolina.

5th and 6th class spoke about their work on the www.soyouthinkyoucanrecycle.com project. They were delighted to announce that on foot of meeting Minister Richard Bruton in the school, the Minister has changed the labelling system in Ireland to make it easier to recycle and seperate waste.

It was a wonderful occasion and a fitting end to the school year. See inside Clontuskert’s classrooms & the reasons why we received this award here:

Visitors from National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

Today we hosted visitors from Singapore in Clontuskert; Mr Sherwin Cheng, Mr Alvin Lim, Miss Tan Ming Ming, Mr Muhammad Farizal and Dr Zoe Boon.

The group are Vice-Principals from Singapore who are currently participants of the Leadership in Education Programme (LEP) at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

The LEP is a full-time six-month programme that prepares Vice-Principals for school leadership. Participants on this programme are selected by the Singapore Ministry of Education. http://www.nie.edu.sg/leadership-professional-development/leadership programmes/leaders-in-education-programme.

The group are visiting Ireland as part of the programme and are led by Dr Zoe Boon, Senior Teaching Fellow, Faculty of Policy and Leadership Studies. They have already visited the Department of Education in Marlborough Street in Dublin and the NCCA; National Centre for Curriculum and Assessment.

On what motivated the group to visit Clontuskert School Mr. Muhammad Farizal said; “We were doing our research on schools in Ireland with strong innovation culture or teaching and learning practices and St. Augustine NS was one of the schools that the team felt that we should learn from. We are very impressed by the school’s high standards and therefore felt that the trip from busy Dublin to Galway would definitely be both useful and meaningful to understand more on the Irish education system.”

The group were given a tour of the school by senior students and visited each classroom where the students presented on the work they do in school and some of the many programs and innovations they participate in. Mary Callaghan prepared a traditional Irish lunch for our visitors with a homemade carrot cake thanks to Mary Kelly. Fr. Finneran, Chairperson of the Board of Management met the group and spoke to them of the work of the Board.

We wish our Singaporean visitors a successful trip to Ireland and look forward to connecting with them again in the future.
