Microsoft Showcase School Celebration
Today we celebrated Microsoft Showcase School status in Clontuskert. We originally achieved this status in 2015. To date, we are the only primary school in the Republic of Ireland to have achieved this award.
The day began with a visit from Adam and Jamie with the Wriggle Roadcaster. Every student from Junior Infants to 6th Class participated in Minecraft for Education and Sphero coding classes.

At 1.00pm in the school hall, 3rd and 4th class presented the schools’ work as a Microsoft Showcase School speaking about OneNote, Flipgrid, Skype in the Classroom and LEGO Robotics.

Guests of Honour included Richard Ryan of Microsoft, Ireland, Dr. Deirdre Butler of St. Patrick’s College, DCU, Kathleen O’ Connor; retired Principal of Ballyadams NS, Co, Laois, Aengus Byrne of Birr Community Secondary School, Fr. Michael Finneran; Chairperson Board of Management, Stephen Scannell and Elaine Bleahen as outgoing officers of the Parents’ Association and Joe Roberts of Teleflex from Raleigh, North Carolina.

5th and 6th class spoke about their work on the www.soyouthinkyoucanrecycle.com project. They were delighted to announce that on foot of meeting Minister Richard Bruton in the school, the Minister has changed the labelling system in Ireland to make it easier to recycle and seperate waste.
It was a wonderful occasion and a fitting end to the school year. See inside Clontuskert’s classrooms & the reasons why we received this award here:

Explorers Education Programme
Today a special visitor called to our school. A lady called Noirín visited us to do a workshop on Marine Litter as part of the Explorers Education Programme.
Noirín shared lots of fun facts such as;
(1) Around 92%-98% of marine life have no backbones, which are also called invertebrates.
(2) A quint squid can grow to 18 meters long.
(3) A starfish has no teeth or bones. They sit on their food and stick out their stomach. Their stomach acid then turns their food into a smoothie consistency and suck it back up. They can also regrow limbs!
(4) There are 12 types of mosquito in Ireland.

Noirín also shared an interesting website with us, called, ‘infomar.ie’. This website has many photos of marine life, activities and facts based on marine life. There is also a great section on shipwrecks too!
at the end of the workshop we played a Jenga game. We wrote out ways to looks after our marine life, and ways that people are destroying our marine life on pieces of paper.
If you picked a positive action you put one block on the Jenga and if you picked a negative action you take a block away.

We all learned from and enjoyed todays workshop. We can’t wait to have Noirín back again soon.

Wonderful night at Midland Classical
Congratulations and thanks to the wonderful Midland Classical group and their accompanist Marie Power for a stunning night of song and music in Clontuskert Parish Church tonight.
Thanks especially to Clontuskert Parents Association for organising the event and decorating the church so beautifully. The event was well attended by students and families, both past and present and members of Clontuskert Parish and friends from further afield.
Afterwards the performers retired to Clontuskert School where the parents had organised tea and cakes for the group.
The Christmas season has truly begun!
Feliz Navidad!
Nollaig Shona agus Athbhliain faoi Mhaise daoibh go léir!
Don’t forget Clontuskert students’ Christmas Carol Service takes place tomorrow night, Tuesday 20th in Clontuskert Parish Church , starting a 7.00pm.
Halloween Preparations
We are busy here in Clontuskert, getting ready for Halloween. The children in both the Junior & Senior rooms have created some very Spooky decorations in art class, the school is looking extremely creepy.
The senior room helped Miss Stokes to design & carve a pumpkin for the school. We weren’t too keen on the texture or smell from the inside of the pumpkin but the end result was worth the mess!
