Spreading Christmas Joy

For Christmas 2020, we are writing to the residents of Hillside Nursing Home in Aughrim, to spread Christmas cheer.

Mike and Nuala Cormican own Hillside and are Ms. Ciara Cormican’s uncle and aunt. Mike is a past pupil of Clontuskert, and he won the annual Parker Cup Sports Award in 2019. He wrote a wonderful poem about Clontuskert, that we have learnt in the Senior Room. See My Clontuskert Home below.

We hope to connect with the residents of Hillside on Microsoft Teams before our Christmas holidays.

My Clontuskert Home

I walked across Clontuskert on a lovely Autumn day,
I stood in old Crossconnell to watch the school kids play.
As I gazed across the cornfields, its greenery turning gold,
It is the parish colours so a story must be told.

It’s a place in Ireland where the waters run so slow,
On the slopes of Ballinure not far from Ballinasloe.
Where the people are so friendly and all wild things roam,
Sure there is no where on earth like my Clontuskert home.

The autumn leaves were falling as I passed St. Matthew’s church,
The swallows were leaving the bell tower perch.
So I looked across at Uracree, I remember things long gone
How the Cavalry approached there in 1691.

You can see from miles around you from the churchyard on the hill,
T’was there we left our loved ones and how we cried our fill.
From Ardranney to Lismany, we have friends across foam,
Who would love to return to their Clontuskert home.

On the winding road through Tristane, I heard a singing thrush,
As I turned at Hurney’s Forge on my way to Ballagh Bush.
As I passed that old old castle, a tear came to my eye,
As I remember my school days when I was a boy.

From near Liskelly’s beeches to the old school I would roam,
And home again that evening to My Clontuskert Home.
A portrait of its beauty is the old Abbey in its gleam,
You can see the hills of Clonascragh, its wide planes and its stream.
The woods of Gortnamona where Percy French wrote his poem,
And the hurling played at Summerset near My Clontuskert Home.
