MindRising Awards Ceremony

Congratulations to 5th and 6th class Winners at MindRising 16 today!

This Saturday 5th and 6th class represented Clontuskert at the MindRising Awards Ceremony in Dublin and also visited the CoderDojo Coolest Projects & Launch’d Dublin in the RDS.

MindRising is a competition celebrating 200 years of the island of Ireland. MindRising champions the use of digital technology in schools and groups and is about telling stories about our past and our future. We worked on our digital storytelling skills across a range of media which included building elements of our project in Minecraft. We were encouraged to remember the past 100 years and imagine what the next 100 years could bring.

We worked really hard on this project. Mrs. Murray’s mam is a history teacher and lent us lots of history books, articles, newspapers and artefacts for researching the 1916 Rising.

We watched many of the excellent documentaries on RTE and TG4 detailing the 1916 Rising and took notes on these.

We used our Senior Room OneNote Classroom Notebook to gather all of our work together. This meant that when we researched either using books or the Internet with our Surface devices everything was kept in one collaborative space.

Triggy from 6th class used Sway to collate all of the information in one place. We loved using Sway as the photographs and videos etc are all Creative Commons. This means that they can be used for education and it was so easy to create and edit. See our project Sway here:

Above you can read our Proclamation for a New Generation as created by the students from 3rd to 6th class.

Our film Portal to MindRising was adapted from original stories written by Kiwi and Triggy. Construction was completed in Minecraft by 5th and 6th class and the screencasting and editing was completed by 6th class.

The film we created; Portal to MindRising can be seen above.

We also printed out the project for display in the hall so everyone in the parish can see it. Thanks to Ms. Kearns and Ms. Stokes for helping us put the printed project together.

We had a ball meeting all of the other MindRisers in Dublin and finding out more about their projects. The projects can be viewed here.

1916 Proclamation Day Tuesday 15th March 2016

The 1916 Proclamation Day was a very special day of commemoration in Clontuskert.
We began at 12.30pm in the school hall.
There was a presentation of our school project on 1916, Irish music, song and dance followed by the raising of the Irish Flag.
Refreshments were served afterwards and many guests from the parish came to mark this special day with us.

This is the Proclamation for a New Generation as created by the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th classes in Clontuskert.

World War One Project Winners

Last night Clontuskert students represented the school at the Ballinasloe Heritage Group World War One Memorial Night in Gullane’s in Ballinasloe. It was an amazing night and the ballroom was packed with people who came to learn more about World War One and how it affected the people of Ballinasloe and Galway. Thanks to all the parents and community members from Clontuskert who came to support.
The projects on display were of a very high standard and we were humbled and delighted to be announced overall winners. The school received a beautiful plaque and a voucher for €100. Thank you to all the members of Ballinasloe Heritage Group for organising such a wonderful project and congratulations on the success of the night. Check out some photos from the night and keep scrolling down to read more about our project.

Timeline of Clontuskert’s World War One Project:

We were very busy working on a project on World War One over the past few weeks. We researched the topic using books Mrs. Murray’s mother; Mary O’ Connell, lent us and interviewing our families to see what connections our families had to the Great War.

On the 26th March Douglas Rafter, Gerry Devlin and Frank Kelly came to the school to do a workshop on World War One with us. They are members of Balliansloe Heritage Group and Gerry runs the Ballinasloe World War One Facebook page.

We worked on our research on the Surface RTs and then shared it to a common file on One Drive. Then we were easily able to edit the information. Next we used an Office Sway to bring all of our project together. We loved using Sway. It is so easy to use and gives suggestions for photographs, videos and artefacts that can be included in the Sway. Best of all, the suggestions are all under a Creative Commons licence so they can be used for education. This makes everything so much easier and means that we are being responsible digital citizens. What we loved the most though is how the finished Sway looks. Check it out here.

We put together a poster presentation for the 29th of May. All of the schools in Ballinasloe were invited into Gullane’s Hotel in Ballinasloe to display their work. We were very excited about this and the opportunity to learn from the other students involved. It was open to the public and all of the students really enjoyed the night.
